We are delighted to see our clients from Intelligent Haptronic Solutions featured in Authority Magazine. Zhouming and team is working to create a haptic (forcefeed back) system for surgeons to practice using technically challenging surgical tools.
The first tool is an endoscope used to carry out operations in the esophagus. It is a complex tool and typically a surgeon will take more than 100 operations before gaining a level of expertise. During this "training" time there can be discomfort and injury to patients. IHS has created a haptic device that allows surgeons to use the real tools in their hands and simulates the same physical sensations such as friction or muscle resistance of the patient they will feel when undertaking the real operation.
Virtro is working with IHS to build out the visual components on this project so that the surgeon will see lifelike 3D models of the esophagus as they slide the tube down. Our challenge is matching the real time deformation of the model (esophagus) that the surgeon sees with the haptic feedback the surgeon feels as a result of manipulating the tool in the virtual patient's esophagus.
This is the first of many such training tools that IHS has in development all of which will provide enormous benefit to training physicians and to actual patients.
